**Community Network Infrastructures (CNI) Special Interest Group (SIG)**               

*Let’s make local community owned and operated infrastructure a global priority!*  

Welcome to the Community Network Infrastructures (CNI) Special Interest Group (SIG) supports the regenerative development and co-design of **Community Networks and Community Infrastructures** through collaboration with local communities, regional stakeholders, and translocal partners. CNI advances an open, accessible, decentralised, distributed and resilient Internet by strengthening digital inclusion, local capacity, affordability, and long-term sustainability across diverse contexts. CNI works to support underconnected communities in the design, deployment, governance, and maintenance of community network and community infrastructure that responds to local needs while aligning with global Internet principles.

### **Our_approach**                                                                                                                               

· Holistic knowledge exchange conversation circles with community, technical, and policy stakeholders

· Connection to relevant external knowledge sources, community standards 

· Development of shared living documentation and situated resources for reciprocity 

· Guidance on devising community network development and multi-stakeholder bottom-up Internet Governance processes

· Embedding energy-aware standards, especially in low-bandwidth scenarious;

· Support for community network engagement with local authorities and enabling policy environments

· Foster open-source software implemented for community networking infrastructure, combing devices, skills development, and governance to build holistic digital ecosystems

**Our activities include**  

**Workshops, Fireside Conversations ( Tactical Action and Skills share Webinars)**

Scope CNI convenes workshops and webinars addressing digital inclusion and connectivity challenges with constituents in disadvantaged, remote, and underserved communities, with a focus on reciprocal, bottom-up and multistakeholder Internet governance, and education modes that reduce barriers for underserved consitutents. \[image2\]

**Capacity Development** CNI develops capacity roadmaps outlining the skills and steps required to build, maintain, and expand community networks, supporting resilient and decentralised connectivity that regroups local initiatives, to further connect Community Network practitioners and supporters translocally for he ongoing maintenance and expansion of meaningful Community-Centered Connectivity solutions. \[image3\]

**Innovative R&D** CNI supports research and development activities that strengthen locally operated and self-hosted community networks, particularly in contexts where access, affordability, and sustainability remain challenges. Where releveant Partnering with ISOC Chapters to expand multilateral cohesion network and encourage regional community networks and infrastructure initiatives for building post-carbon, climate-appropriate infrastructure for regional and remote communities; \[image4\]

**Local Leadership and Participation** CNI fosters and promotes codesign methods of skills sharing and peer learning to strengthen community participation in shared physical Internet infrastructure, including engagement with regional interconnection points, open-source service providers, supporting open-access cabling \[image5\]

**Herloom Networks and Sustainable Infrastructure** CNI encourages cost-effective and environmentally responsible approaches to community network infrastructure through shared learning on maintenance, operations, and resource efficiency, iterative practices, methods and policies that allow community networks to form, thrive, grow and scale while keeping local ownership and relevance. \[image6\]
